Glendale Hyperion Widening and Retrofit
Preserving and Restoring Historic Bridges
Built in the early 1930s, this complex of bridges listed on the State Historic Register crosses the Los Angeles River and I-5 Freeway. In addition to preserving and restoring them to meet current seismic codes, the project improves traffic, bicycle and pedestrian safety, increases accessibility to the neighborhood community, and enhances the river environment.
Improvements include widening the Glendale Boulevard bridges, realigning I-5 northbound ramps and LA River bike path, constructing a new bicycle/pedestrian bridge across the LA River, improving bike and pedestrian facilities throughout, improving the seismic strength of all six bridges, and upgrading the drainage system and infiltration basins.
