Kennecott Land (Rio Tinto)
Carrying Capacity Analysis and Programming
Land Planning / Master Plan
Visioning for the 100-year Plan
In 2001 Kennecott Land initiated a large-scale planning effort for the 93,000-acre Kennecott Utah Copper land holding in Salt Lake and Tooele Counties. At that time the newly formed Kennecott Land was tasked with trying to understand the development potential of the property following the mine closure. A national search was conducted to identify a consultant team to prepare a strategic plan. The Planning Center, Calthorpe Associates, the Gault Group, and Psomas were selected and together they produced the Sunrise Oquirrh Mountain (SOM) Strategic Plan; known today as the West Bench Master Plan.
Psomas served as project manager for this complex effort and led the team in the visioning process, site analysis, carrying capacity analysis, programming, land planning/master plan, and prepared the SOM Strategic Plan. Psomas also evaluated the infrastructure systems required to support the project and produced long-range phasing plan with a 130+ year build-out timeline.
