New Water Source for Sacramento County

Sacramento County’s main water supply is groundwater, which could not sustain further growth and development in the Laguna and Elk Grove regions of the County. The addition of the new Vineyard Surface Water Treatment Plant allows the County to tap into river water during years of drought, thus preventing over pumping of groundwater. The completed project now allows Sacramento County to increase its service from 55,000 customers currently to a capacity of 300,000.

A joint project involving the Sacramento County Water Agency and East Bay Municipal Utilities District, the new $207 million facility is a 50 MGD conventional process water treatment plant. Provisions allow expansion to 100 MGD to meet future demand. Psomas provided construction management and inspection services.

Additional facilities on the 80-acre site include a set of eight 2,000 hp motor pump stations, a 17-mile pipeline, a two-story 35,500 SF LEED Gold administration/operations center, a single-story 28,000 SF warehouse/shop building, and a corporation yard.
