Safety Improvements near Elementary School

Psomas designed a pedestrian HAWK (High intensity Activated crossWalK) signal to facilitate access to Laguna Elementary School and improve safety for the nearly 400 school children who walk this road daily.

HAWK signals, which were pioneered in Tucson, Arizona, have proven to be one of the most effective means of protecting pedestrians at road crossings and have been included in the latest edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

The project also included the addition of sidewalks and ADA-compliant facilities, drainage improvements to alleviate flooding at the intersection, and the realignment of Shannon Road to eliminate an existing traffic safety problem.
