Design-Build Federal Courthouse Achieves LEED® Gold

This new United States Courthouse sits on 2.5 acres overlooking Mill Creek Park in downtown Bakersfield. The $25 million, 33,400 SF building includes one magistrate court and chamber (with space to accommodate a second courtroom in the future); a district clerk’s office; and facilities for U.S. Marshal, U.S. Pre-Trial, and U.S. Probation Services. The two-story building includes space on the second level to add a second courtroom in the future.

As a design-build project, coordination with the architect and contractor throughout the civil engineering design process was vital to ensure all elements were integrated seamlessly into the overall project design. Psomas’ services included utilities, site grading and drainage, water quality and stormwater pollution prevention plan management, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) monitoring, ALTA surveys, records of survey, and topographic surveys. Sustainable civil design features related to the civil work for this LEED® Gold project concentrated on drainage design, including Low Impact Development measures such as bioswales, infiltration basins, and mechanical stormwater quality devices.
