Psomas paleontologist Melissa Macias has discovered the bone fragments of a fossilized whale while monitoring work at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine. At more than 40 feet long, this is the biggest sperm whale found in Orange County. It is estimated that the fossil dates back at least 10 million years, a time when the hills just east of Irvine were thousands of feet under the ocean. Read full article here.
