Creative Re-Use of Industrial Plant
The Plant was the largest outdoor shopping center in the City of San Jose at the time of completion. Developed on the former property of the General Electric manufacturing plant, the 653,000 SF center includes an 110,000 SF town square park and 8,000 SF of office space. The new shopping center provides much needed retail stores, restaurants, and eateries in an area of the city that currently lacks these amenities. The new complex is adjacent to planned housing communities that expect to bring more than 6,000 residents to the area. The development borrows Art Moderne architectural elements from a 1948 office building, the only structure remaining from the original plant complex.
Features of The Plant include a pedestrian-friendly site design with a variety of trees, community meeting space, and outdoor dining. Psomas provided complete civil engineering and surveying services, including signal and street widening improvements to frontage streets, design of a parking lot that accommodates large delivery trucks, and utilities and drainage.
