Relieving Traffic with a New Interchange in the Central Valley
With growing traffic demands in the Bakersfield region, Caltrans District 6, in cooperation with the City of Bakersfield, proposed constructing a new modified partial cloverleaf interchange along SR 178 at Morning Drive. The $25 million project includes widening SR 178 from a two-lane expressway to a four-lane highway, and then realigning and widening Morning Drive to a six-lane roadway. An overcrossing structure and highway on- and off-ramps are also included in the project.
Psomas was responsible for completing the Project Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED) phase and portions of the plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) work. During the PA&ED phase, Psomas’ subconsultants were responsible for preparation of the EIR/EA (Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment), along with the traffic forecasts and operations analysis. Work also included preparation of the Project Report, multiple technical studies, and Design Exception Fact Sheets. Coordination was required with Caltrans District 6, Kern County, and the City of Bakersfield.
