Upgrading a Complicated Roundabout

The oversized and unusually configured intersection of Pomona Avenue, 7th Street, and Adella Avenue required updates to improve safety and improve resident access. Located along a heavily traveled road, it is adjacent to a public park, provides direct access to homes, and is traveled by children going to and from school.

Psomas performed an evaluation and final construction documents for a permanent roundabout which included new curbing, traffic-calming landscaped islands, speed tables, directional signing and striping, high visibility crosswalk striping with Rapid Flashing Beacons, and curb ramp upgrades for ADA compliance.

Input gathered from residents at public workshops was incorporated into the design to improve the functionality and aesthetics of the existing temporary roundabout. The final design goals included:

  • Directing motorists safely through the roundabout
  • Ensuring drivers have good visibility of other vehicles as well as any pedestrians or cyclists who might be crossing the approach/departure legs
  • Providing safe access at each of the residential driveways within the intersection
